Growing up computer-literate

Computing comes naturally to two brothers who help their mom and each other share ideas and interests on the Web.

Technology is becoming increasingly important because students and teachers are all going to need to learn how to use computers. They're going to need to feel comfortable with them because over the next decade or so computers are going to become more and more important to people. And everyone's going to need to know how to use computers pretty well. Otherwise, they won't be able to do their jobs as well or get their work in on time.--Brennan

It makes me feel good to share information with other people.--Tristan

Brennan, who is entering ninth grade this fall, and Tristan, his ten-year-old brother, do not fit the computer nerd profile. They do not spend all of their free time in front of a browser, and they have wide and varied interests. While they are not Internet-obsessed, they do use the Web to share what they're excited about with others.

Growing up with computers in the house and with parents who know how to use them has certainly influenced these brothers and their levels of skill and comfort with technology. It has become second nature to them, and Brennan and Tristan don't seem terribly impressed with what they've accomplished on the Web. But I was, so I asked for an interview.

I spoke with the boys over the phone one morning, one at a time. We discussed their Web pages--Brennan has put up a page on science fiction and physics and Tristan has done a page on spiders--their working relationship, and their work at school. For Brennan and Tristan, learning how to use computers and the Web was as natural as learning how to walk.
